My Mother’s Day

by Jessie K on May 13, 2012

This little girl.

Homemade waffles topped with fresh whipped cream, blackberries and huckleberry syrup. (Like the kind my mom used to make for me when I was a kid!)

A leisurely stroll with my family.  (Jake looks so….domestic in this photo.  I hardly recognize him.)  The day was pretty much perfect.

What a great photo of Jake and June with Sohla. The two look to be just fine now… the transition period for June has ended, it seems.

I’m not sure which is more compelling — the waffle or the trail walking photo. Definitely the waffle.

Finished your book this weekend in a 30 hour period. Loved it. Loved it! Discussed it on the porch of a rental cabin with my husband. You weren’t joking when you said you laid yourself bare. I admire your self reflection. I hope someone (or several people) close to you read it and said “now Jessie, don’t be so hard on yourself!” Because, dang.

Reading your book made me think back on some choices I made after marrying my husband. We have similar trajectories — I gave up my life in the UK where I worked at a major auction house to come live with my husband in coastal South Carolina while he finished training for submarine duty in the Navy. That first year was… awful. I was “writing my dissertation” which is fancy talk for being woefully unemployed. I must have screamed “I GAVE UP EVERYTHING FOR YOU” about a thousand times until, finally, I realized I couldn’t do that anymore. Things got much better after that.

Anyways, cheers to you! Great read! I hope you are getting nice feedback and that somebody gave you a good cuddle after reading through the tough sections.

Hey, thanks for the feedback, Lauren! Feel free to cut and paste your comment onto Amazon (including a 5-star review). Seriously. I won’t mind a bit. ;-) And yeah, I have heard I’m hard on myself. I blame it on my hard scrabble Montana genes.

Also! I did the sewing-like-a-maniac thing, too! Only instead of aprons I made quilts. Quilts for days. Quilts for every girl and boy. It was wild.

Went to the (Bliss) post library to ask for your book today; put in a request that they order it. They were all blah blah best seller list and then I pointed out that you were a milspouse (and Army at that) so hopefully they get on that.

Do post libraries always stick to the best seller list? They miss some of the best books if they do.

And let’s all hope Jake stays domesticated from now on!!

She’s already got three kids’ pair waiting for her to grow into. A red pair, a pink pair and a blue pair. She’s all set for life as a woman.
