Scenes from Memorial Day weekend

by Jessie K on May 30, 2012

If I haven’t already mentioned, another fabulous thing about living in a small town is the small town carnival.  It’s small, it’s affordable, it is all but guaranteed you’ll run into someone you know.   Hopefully that someone won’t have a tattoo on their neck.

June contemplates the swing from her daddy’s shoulders.

I’m way more excited about her very first carousel ride than she is!!!!!  (You can tell just how excited I am by my excessive exclamation point usage, or EEPU for short.)

Mom and daughter’s first ferris wheel ride!!!!!!

June did not like this contraption one bit. Luckily, we were the only ones on this ride so I could tell the carnie to halt pronto (another great thing about small town carnivals:  no lines = fast service).

June witnessed her very first “lawn mower” pull.  I put it in quotes because this souped-up, turbo machine is clearly not capable of innocently clipping the grass.

The contestant’s front wheel — which you may notice looks more suitable for a tricycle — went flying off four seconds after the race started.  The driver was from Jake’s home town of Baltimore.  Baltimore did not represent.

June was very taken with dipping French fries into ketchup.

Only she didnt eat the fry.  She licked the ketchup off and dipped again…and again…and again.  She’s not just a double dipper, but a triple, quadruple dipper!

The next day, she lounged poolside with her buddy Cora.

While the girls splashed, Cora’s daddy Brendan invented a new summertime delicacy — a burger made with a beef patty AND a strip of grilled chicken.  The name of this summertime delight?  The Cheef, a mash-up of chicken and beef.

Why has no one thought of this before???

Let’s call it The Chief, shall we?  All hail The Chief!!! (Coming to an urban gastropub or small town fair near you.)

Jake prepares June for her very first luge run; she survived.

What a great Memorial Day weekend.  Now who’s in the mood for The Chief??!?!

I laughed out loud reading about June and the ketchup and fries…my boys did the exact same thing!

I finished your book this week. Great job and in case you haven’t heard it lately, you are a strong lady to put yourself out there while living in a small town (or ever for that matter). Good for you! You rock.

What a fabulous weekend you had! Happy belated Memorial Day to you and your family. I’m sure Jake honored his fallen comrades in thoughts and prayers, as have those of us who are not veterans. We are thankful for the service of all these men and women.
