Solha had her picture loads and loads over the weekend by fabulous D.C.-based photographer Melissa Golden for an upcoming story (I’ll share details once it’s closer to publication). This is one of my favorite Melissa Golden portraits; I love its youthful energy and exuberance.
Jake and I got on well with Melissa in a hurry. Not only was she smart and interesting and easy to talk with, but as a self described “army brat” who grew up on military bases all over the world, she was extremely chill…the kind of person who makes you want to kick your feet up and drink in a mint julep on a late Friday afternoon. In fact, that’s exactly what we did. We all enjoyed one of my minty mint juleps before the photo shoot.
I’m of the opinion that army brats are generally tolerant, unfazed and unperturbed people — the result of a peripatetic childhood living amid different cultures. Melissa even speaks a little Arabic.
We had Solha doing all sorts of stunts and tricks to show what a live wire she is: running through fields, being chased around the yard, we even got a few of her jumping off a low roof. Don’t worry, she didn’t get hurt. She’s from Kandahar.

How exciting! Can’t wait to see the story!
That dog has a permanent smile!
Very fun – looking forward to reading the story!
You mean she didn’t jump OVER the roof?
Thanks for the link! I spent a great deal of time on the site. Her work is truly amazing.
If anyone can do Solha justice, it’s Melissa!
I have to agree with you on the Brat assessment. When you move 15 times before you graduate high school… you do eventually get used to just going with the flow. That adaptablility is seriously one of the good byproducts of growing up Brat. One downside though is that I think a lot of us have a hard time developing more than “surface” relationships.. ones that are lived in the moment.. but not always deep. It is hard to get really attached to people when you are always leaving them… or they are leaving you.
Interesting perspective, Sarina. Thanks for sharing!
