Scenes from the growing season

by Jessie K on June 19, 2012

The potatoes, corn and tomatoes are coming up.

Twelve laying hens live in this fortress but they’re the most bashful bunch of birds I’ve ever encountered. We’ve had them nearly a month now and I feel like I never see them, they’re always hiding in or underneath the Hen Hut. (You can just make out a pair of chicken legs underneath the Hen Hut on the left.)  Definitely no eggs yet.  What’s the hold up, ladies?

But we did get 50 new broiler chicks yesterday.  They aren’t nearly so bashful.

That garden looks great. On the hen situation, is there maybe a hawk or other sinister being around? That could be why they don’t come out.

Hi Jessie, were they around when you slaughtered the other boilers? Maybe they said, “Holy Crap! I’m not going out there!”
LOL!
