Barn update II

by Jessie K on October 8, 2012

Jake continues to make big progress on the barn. Exhibit F: A new water line has been installed. Can’t keep animals without ready access to water.

Jake makes it all look so easy. Installing an underground water line is crazy time consuming and laborious yet he knocks it out before I’m finished with the breakfast dishes (did I mention I want a dishwasher?).

The grass seed has been planted.

It looks like someone spilled a bag of Uncle Ben’s.

The windows in the rear are all set and installed.

Jake’s hoping to be more or less finished with it in time to process our final batch of meat birds for the year at the end of October.

Think he can do it? Do bears poop in the woods?

See the evolution of the new barn here and here.

Being a city girl all my life, I have to inquire. You stated, “… in time to process our final batch of meat birds….”, does this mean the barn will be a place for Jake to work and animals won’t live there? I know the chickens have their own house, but couldn’t remember if you had other animals.

Hi Brenda: Part of the reason we’re building the barn is to give us adequate space to butcher 50-60 meat birds roughly 3-4 times a year. Right now, we butcher them in our driveway, which is less than ideal. Jake is also reserving a room in the barn to be used as a brooder — an enclosed area to give baby chicks a warm, safe place to stay until they’re big enough to be moved outside onto grass.
