He was the best dog that ever lived: smart, intuitive, obedient, smiley…
…a dog with a taste for the finer things. (Here, he crashes in a luxurious Motel 6 bed somewhere in Missouri.)
…and it still hurts to say goodbye.
You left us too soon, Cowboy. We love you.

Great post, Jessie. We lost our Katie B. about a year ago.
Sweetest dog ever.
I’m so sorry, Chuck. What is it about the winter? Keep your new dog extra close (which I know you do)!
I knew Cowboy well. I lived near Marmie, and I actually would go see him and love on him whenever he visited. He was truly one of the kindest, most intelligent and lovable dogs I have ever known. His King Tut “eye-lined look” eyes were expressive and he warmed my heart. I cried the day I heard he was gone. Jessie, thank you for the pictures, and the memories. Most importantly; thanks for sharing your Cowboy with all of us. xo
Awwww, thank you, Jeanne! He was a treasure, that is for sure.
It’s good that you have so many great pictures to treasure. He was clearly loved and returned that love many times over.
So sorry it hurts so much, still today.
Thanks for sharing. My dog Spanky, who was always into mischief, got killed via a hit n run 15 years ago. He was the greatest pet and will never be replaced in my heart. I think pets like that are one of a kind. Spanky was only with me for 3 years, but he loved me a lifetime’s worth.
Wonderful dog…but more a friend! Hugs to all of you!
It still hurts.
I love the picture of Cowboy in the Motel 6 bed. We had a previous dog who loved to be covered in bed. She was so sweet. Our current dog will accept no bed coverings and it sorta bothers me. Odd, I know, but I still want to snuggle her up in the covers. I am sorry about your loss of cowboy. It is hard to say goodbye to those we love, whether covered in fur or not.
We are sad Cowboy is gone but very happy he was here. Now we know why it was so important to get Shola home.
What a lovely post in tribute to your beloved Cowboy. He was beautiful and I love the photo of him asleep under the covers.
I too have a “Cowboy”, along with “Rupert” (both Basset Hounds) and I dread the day we have to say goodbye. Dogs, especially our first or our “heart dog”, are such a special part of our lives, it’s just so unfair that they never stay long enough.
Children and Dogs are as necessary to the welfare of the country as Wall Street and the railroads. -Harry Truman
I remember reading about Cowboy in your book and feeling so sad. Last Tuesday our beloved dog died tragically at the age of 5. We are beyond devastated. He was the best, most Zen dog ever and my best friend. People will disappoint you but dogs remain loyal and steadfast.
