My name is Jessie, and I hoard Ziploc bags

It’s funny what you learn about yourself through the eyes of others.

So regular readers know that one of my best friends from New York, Pauline has been staying with us for the past two weeks and apparently I have a thing for resealable plastic baggies, according to her. It appears that I never throw them away. I just keep washing them and washing them and reusing them until my drying rack looks like a freakin’ shrine to Ziploc.

I never realized I did this. But I registered I may have a problem when Pauline had a few good laughs at my expense: “Nice one, bag lady. Here’s a used paper towel you can add to your collection. Ha HA HAA!”

Was I always like this? Or did my baggie obsession spawn only after I moved from NYC to the country? Because saving baggies seems like a country thing to do, right up there with canning meat and stockpiling dinner scraps for chickens.  Does this mean I’m turning into one of those annoyingly frugal, eccentric old ladies who saves stuff like used aluminum foil, too?  Oh wait, I already do that.

Now that I think of it,  I guess I’ve always been a little on the frugal side.  And truth be known, it didn’t really have much to do with saving the planet, though what a virtuous thought. Mine boiled down to simple economics: Do I want to blow $7—seven dollars!!?!—on a box of freezer bags or spend the same amount of money on carob clusters from the bulk bins?

You know where my money goes.
