Lumberjack chic, c’est moi

seralouiseblogspot

I realized something quite profound since I’ve been in NYC this week:   I’m actually on the cutting edge of fashion.

Some of you may know that I have a habit of making fun of what I thought was my hopelessly out-of-date, bad lumberjack-Land’s End-meets-Woolrich style that’s somehow superseded my once pert urban wardrobe.

Well, this weekend while up in NYC,  I checked out the New Amsterdam Market on South Street Seaport. New Amsterdam Market is not so much a greenmarket as it is a meat, cheese, jam and pickle market featuring artisanal goods (and tons of free samples!!!) from many of the city’s top food purveyors. Vendors included Saxelby Cheesemongers, butcheries like Marlow and Daughters and The Meat Hook, picklers like Brooklyn Brine Co. and Rick’s Picks (all of these guys are based in Brooklyn, by the way, the epicenter of this culinary trend). I was there to hang out with my co-author Kelly Geary, who was selling roasted pear goat cheese tart with fried sage, soups and handmade walnut crackers.

And I noticed that most of the women  there, from shoppers to vendors, were all dressed like, well, me.  Let me be clear, country dwellers: City folks are aping our look!  The lumberjack-who-lives-in-a-woodshed look is having a moment!  Flannel shirts, down vests, old jeans and boots with lots of necklaces and accessories is the de facto uniform of this thriving scene.   And I’m on the cutting edge of it. Let’s take a look:

Fashion shot 1:  Me in my garden modeling the utilitarian lumberjack look: ratty gloves, down vest, and insulated Carhaart overalls.  I can see this outfit totally selling out at Scoop.

Fashion shot 2: My stylish “back to the land” look is great for spreading wood ashes over the garden.
