The funny thing about princess movies of today versus yesterday

frozen___elsa_and_anna__finished_by_shezin84-d72aognI finally broke the seal and let June watch her very first princess movie, Frozen…have you heard of it? It’s only like the top grossing kids movie of all time. Yeah, you could say I’m a little behind the times. I just upgraded to my first Walkman! In fact, I think it’s the first princess movie I’ve seen myself since The Beauty and the Beast. (Yikes.) And I noticed something funny about this mega popular princess hit versus all the princess hits of yore (Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, etc.) Click here to find out what it is.

I wouldn’t let my daughter watch those princess movies, and she didn’t like them anyway, usually because of some nasty antagonist. I have never liked the recurrent theme of some handsome guy trying to get together with the poor little girl. But my now 12 yo daughter begged and begged me to see Frozen and wouldn’t let her. I finally relented and she declared that “this one wasn’t like that Mommy!” She told me that it was about sibling rivalry. She mentioned nothing about any romantic themes. Maybe there weren’t any; maybe she just didn’t relate to it (thank goodness!) But she now *loves* Frozen.
