My disgusting flock of cannibals

by Jessie K on January 12, 2010

Here’s something no chicken farmer should have to witness:  Her own flock EATING THE REMAINS of one their own!!   Pukes!!!

I had mentioned that we’ve lost two miniature, black-and-white speckled hens to a hawk in the last week.  Well, I was down at the Hen Hut just now and noticed a gaggle of hens pecking at something white. I walked over to have a look and they were snacking on the remains of their eviscerated sister! Apparently, the hawk had had his fill and left the carcass for the hens. SICK!

It gets worse. As I approached, aghast, to retrieve the carcass and throw it down the sink hole, one of the roosters — the one I swear fantasizes about killing me with his clawed feet — ATTACKED ME. He headbutted my legs as hard as he could. I actually screamed. Then he bum rushed me again! So I screamed again and picked up a nearby stick. He made a third attempt but I beat his ass with my weapon.  I know that sounds cruel, animal lovers, but please understand….it’s either kill or be killed down in the chicken yard!  And there’s no way this chicken farmer is getting her ass kicked by a rooster.  I shall prevail.

(But I left the carcass. I was too afraid to get in the middle of the flock to get it.)

Talk about being chicken! –but seriously, I’d be scared too…large birds freak me out—Alfred Hitchcock had the right idea—one chicken–not scary–a whole flock, well that’s another story–And now we know they’re MEAT EATERS!!!!!!!! What’s up with this grain says one chicken to the other–where’s the beef?– Lord help us all.
