Problem: We have two giant white peach trees coming on and usually at this time of year, I can be found gearing up for a canning, jam-making, peach-dehydrating odyssey. Unfortunately, that’s not happening this year due to the newborn permanently fixed to my chest. And now I wonder: What will happen to all 10 million of those gorgeous white peaches? I fear Jake will end up making more peach wine out of them. Peach wine tastes about as good as it sounds.
It’s funny. I used to think that I could keep doing my usual thing with a newborn in the picture. I thought I would be able to can my brains out right about now. I figured June would just sleep all day, freeing me up to indulge in all my usual pursuits. Wrong. So very, very wrong. So tragically wrong. June naps maybe once or twice a day and when she’s not napping, she’s usually one whimper away from a Three Mile Island-scale meltdown.
I suppose this is my comeuppance for such blind ignorance. In the meantime, I wonder how many peaches I can eat a day.
I’m going for ten.

I’m planning on going on a canning binge this weekend, I hope, so if you want I’ll take the peaches and split the bounty!
Kathryn: I don’t think they’ll quite be ready this weekend, but if they are, help yourself! Come on over. And I will def want some of the bounty. I can’t live without peach butter.
You can freeze the peaches, doesn’t take as much time.
My boys were just like your baby girl. They never slept day or night and cried most of the time. Just know that it gets better. Don’t compare her to all the other babies out there, just let her be June. Don’t let all the people with perfect sleepy babies make you feel like you are doing everything wrong, some babies just have a harder time.
My hardest baby ended up being my most mellow toddler and older child. He is a real blessing.
Hi Peggi: Thanks for the encouragement! I keep telling myself — fussy babies make awesome toddlers. Fussy babies make awesome toddlers. It may turn out not to be true, but it gets me through the crying jags.
Contact a local (or not so local) food pantry or church pantry. I know ours loves being able to hand out fresh fruit because it’s something our clients don’t ever get much of.
Start your own produce stand? Or “pick your own” peach sessions for friends.. wish we lived closer.. i’d rescue some for sure!
Ugh, I am so not looking forward to this
LOL although I am due in March and all we do in March is prune Apple trees – oh darn, I’ll have to pass.
But I feel your pain because right now I have so much in my garden that needs canning and it is all going to waste because the mere sight of something edible makes me hurl!
slice as time permits and dehydrate???
I’m thinking a few frozen containers of homemade “baby food” peaches for the upcoming months when June is ready to eat them. Perhaps you could convince Hubby to pick, peel, and puree a few for you while making his wine?
There’s localvore365.org also, a website that connects food and eaters. Of course there needs to be someone close to you who also checks the website.
Could you sell them to a local CSA farmer, who could put them in the weekly shares?
I like the pick-your-own idea for friends. I’ve really been wanting to go over the mountain with the kids to pick peaches this summer and just haven’t made it…I really want the kids to see the chickens before slaughter too. Let’s be in touch!
Laura: YOu know I’m not going anywhere. Come over anytime. I’ll let you know when the peaches are ready.
