Snake attack

by Jessie K on August 11, 2011

I’m afraid I have bad news.

Solha was attacked the other night by what appears to have been a pit viper, a venomous snake.

When the soldiers found little Solha in the morning, her paw and leg were swollen and she didn’t want to move.  Jake and the guys iced it a few times but her condition quickly worsened. Jake asked one of the other Reservists, a vet in the civilian world, to take a look at the wound.  The vet was able to scrounge up some medicine, bandages, and an IV for her.  He lanced the bite wound.  Solha started feeling better, which gave Jake confidence she would make it another day, but today her condition appears to have worsened.  As Jake said in an email, “Her little body is having a hard time producing red blood cells to fight the venom.  Please say a prayer for her.  We are doing what we can but she’s so little and the snake is very deadly.”

Please send this little puppy your best wishes today.

UPDATE 8/12:  Still no word from Jake about how she’s doing.

NO! Her scared little face in that top picture is breaking my heart! I will say a prayer, and continue keeping your whole family in my prayers, of course (its more like wishes than prayers, since I don’t really pray).

Thanks for the awesome squash cake recipe and for the hilarious methamphetamine-themed post yesterday. Who knew the saddest, most depressing show on television could be the subject matter of such a funny blog post?

I had a 10 lb jack russell bitten in the face by a copperhead.. while her face swelled up twice it’s normal size.. she was fine.. just had to give her antibiotics for possible infection. It was nasty to look at.. but she did recover. It just will depend on how toxic the venom was.. how much was injected etc.. I would say though that the pup is showing much less swelling than my dog had.. though that could be because of the area of the bite? I will think good thoughts for her.

I hope you’re right, qhgirl. That your dog recovered from a bite to the face gives me hope.

That’s very sad. This little puppy must be some comfort to the men on deployment. I really hope she gets better. Thinking of you too!

Its time – its time to bring Jake and his fellow soldiers home. Enough is enough and Jake, bring Shola home to little June. All of you are in our prayers – that includes all of our wonderful volunteer members of our military.

I’m so sorry this happened, not just for the dog, but because I know having a pet to care for together was an attempt by the soldiers to have something good and normal in their lives there. I pray she makes it.

Awww….she is such a sweet girl and I’m sure a welcome stress release for the soldiers. I hope that she gets better real soon and starts making her smile face in pictures, rather than that sad boo boo face.

Solha is with our troops. That makes her a tough little fighter. She’s receiving good care. Keep the faith and with a little luck she may pull thru.

Oh poor baby! I will pray for all of them, I am sure Solha has a lot of friends in the troops there.

That’s too bad. The only good thing I can say is dogs are incredibly tough.
